Please read and think about

At the meeting a few nights Ed Harrigan brought this up.

Brother Knights, this note asks you to include in your regular prayers, prayer for our Nation during this time of threats to our freedom of religion.”

We brought up the attack on religious liberty and rights of conscience posed by the Federal government’s Health and Human Services mandate that all health insurance plans cover hormonal contraception and other chemical abortifacient drugs, free of charge.

The final HHS rule, which is now law, includes only a very narrow exemption for what the government deems ”religious organizations” – St. Paul as a parish will be exempted, but organizations such as Catholic hospitals, schools, and service organizations will be compelled to comply with the rule.

The government decided to delay when the rule goes into effect until 2013, after the 2012 presidential elections. They stated that this was an accommodation, to give institutions time to figure out how to comply with the rule. Of this, Cardinal Dolan of New York has stated, “In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our conscience.

The HHS mandate on health insurance is not the only direct attack on religious freedom that immigrant Catholic families found themselves.

Cardinal Francis George has made several startling statements regarding our country’s slide toward religious intolerance. Not given to wild exaggerations, the Cardinal has stated “I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” – this in 2010, after the passage of legislation of same-sex civil unions in Illinois.

In February of 2012, Cardinal George wrote this column for the archdiocese’s newspaper:http://www.catholicnewworld.com/cnwonline/2012/0226/cardinal.aspx

In it, he states: “What will happen if the HHS regulations are not rescinded? A Catholic institution, so far as I can see right now, will have one of four choices:

1) secularize itself, breaking its connection to the church, her moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop. This is a form of theft. It means the church will not be permitted to have an institutional voice in public life.

2) Pay exorbitant annual fines to avoid paying for insurance policies that cover abortifacient drugs, artificial contraception and sterilization. This is not economically sustainable.

3) Sell the institution to a non-Catholic group or to a local government.

4) Close down.”

The threats to our God-given freedom of religion, our rights of conscience, and our Catholic institutions could not be more serious or immediate. The U.S. Bishops have called for a “Fortnight for Freedom”, commencing on June 21, the feast of Saints Thomas More and John Fisher, (martyrs for freedom from state interference with rights of conscience), and finishing on Independence Day July 4. Our Bishops intend this to be a special time of “prayer, study, catechesis, and public action”.

As details become available regarding specific local opportunities to participate in the Fortnight for Freedom, we’ll pass them along.”\

Thank you Ed and keep us posted.
