Defend Marriage in Illinois

Dear Brother Knights,

As you know, a bill redefining marriage in Illinois is likely to be introduced this month in Springfield. The Bishops of Illinois strongly oppose the measure.

Few laws could be more consequential than a law redefining marriage. The Catholic Church, based on Scripture and the Judeo-Christian tradition, has always taught that marriage is the faithful, exclusive, and lifelong union between one man and one woman. This mutual bond provides the most favorable environment in which to protect the rights and best interests of children. Redefining marriage would likely translate into discrimination against the Church, her charitable institutions, and individual people of faith. As the Bishops of Illinois have warned, “when the ways of nature and nature’s God conflict with civil law, society is in danger.”

At the 130th Supreme Convention, the Knights of Columbus unanimously resolved that we “will never waver in our efforts to promote the Church’s understanding of marriage as the faithful, exclusive, and lifelong union of one man and one woman joined in an intimate partnership of life and love.”

We have the opportunity to send a clear message to lawmakers in Springfield. Visit the Illinois Catholic Conference website today to contact your elected representatives. Respectfully state to them your support for the true nature of marriage as it has existed throughout the ages. Encourage your friends, family, and fellow parishioners to do the same. As always, pray that the Holy Spirit enlightens our elected officials to adopt laws that affirm the family and the authentic nature of marriage. Pray also for the State of Illinois and for our country.

Vivat Jesus!
